Because of the Second Life reference, I was pointed at this Boston Globe post. I was amused by the following juxtaposition: …there will be greater access to government, with online services to let anyone question members of the president’s Cabinet or track every dime of the federal budget. … Judging by the campaign’s position paper on technology policy – calls and e-mails to the Obama transition team were not returned – the president-elect believes…Created

No, not diabolical lesbians, but instead a valley (and surrounding hillside) that’s part of the South Downs in Sussex, not far north of Brighton and Hove. Now maintained by the National Trust. Carolyn, Sam and I had an outing there after a late Sunday breakfast. We hiked around, had a picnic lunch, and I got some kite flying in. I was worried that I was going to have packed my kite for nothing, but already I’ve flown both days this weekend.

We’re doing some cleaning up getting ready to go to England and I see a crumpled (from travel) piece of paper on my desk… It’s the tasting chart from scotchbuddy.com as I was part of this tasting group. Rather than continue to live with a crumpled piece of paper on my desk, I’m going to preserve the results in my blog where you can refer to it in case you ever wish to buy me scotch.

There are people in my life who, when they keep re-appearing, cause me to ask myself why. I can only assume it’s because they have a lesson to teach me and I’ve not learned it yet. I have to assume it’s something about communication style with this individual. As Carolyn put it, “Some geeks are cute. Their social awkwardness leading to a shyness that can be endearing. Others are just off-putting.Created

I am fair at keeping Linked In up to date. I’m recently rejuvenated on facebook (now that they let me have “AC Capehart” — I had to get special permission to get past their error: “too many capital letters.”) I’m woefully out of date in Sam’s newsletters, but Carolyn has given me notes at least for a big blow-out for year 3 which is right around the corner. I see that even twitter is way behind.Created

This was sitting in my drafts for a long time. This is from the Berkeley Kite Festival a couple months back. Kite Ballet. Definitely impressively coordinated flying.Created

Sam has been exploring what it means to be alive. We tell her trees are alive, but rocks aren’t. Flowers are alive, but cars aren’t. I’ve been using growth as a proxy for life when Sam asks “Why aren’t cars alive?” “Are trucks alive?” We were going through some of this today eating out on the patio of “House of Curries” on Solano Ave in Berkeley (or is it still Albany there?Created

I was riding my motorcycle to work the other day when I saw a service van that I thought was pretty funny and made me think of one of those joke vans they use on the Simsons to indicate that it’s really a spy van trying not to be a spy van. Simpsons example: Flowers By Irene In this case, the van was emblazoned with a picture of a water heater and the company name “Just Water Heaters, Inc.Created

I’ve been mentioning Sam’s stories recently. Mom just read Sam a draft of another children’s story, and now Sam is “writing” and telling stories. The most recent one is something about how when Mommy was a little girl and Sam was a bigger girl and there was a fox in the woods and we made it to the top of big rock candy mountain. (She’s also been listening to the soundtrack of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?Created

Overheard today as Sam saw me go into the home office to get my stuff together to go into the office today: Mommy, I have to do some work today {pause} on the computer. No doubt b/c of yesterday. She threw a mini-fit at dinner time because it was time to wash hands instead of continuing to play with alphababy.Created
